Giorgio Gatti

1868 – 1936

Born in Chieri in 1868, Giorgio Gatti moved to Turin in 1890. Little is known about his apprenticeship in Turin, but the only active workshops at the time were those of Enrico Marchetti, Francesco Guadagnini, and Romano Marengo Rinaldi. He likely received training from Marchetti before opening his own workshop in Turin in 1893. Curiously, Gatti’s workshop was listed in business directories as “Gatti Giorgio & Co., musical instruments and dealer in cereals & flour.” Gatti sold a strange combination of musical instruments and food until 1917, when he began to focus solely on instrument making. Gatti produced many violins but was also known for his guitars.
