Basses

Today the double bass is called upon to multi-task like no other member of the bowed instrument family. It is the foundation of the string orchestra, symphony orchestra, concert band and chamber ensemble, and a solo instrument and member of the rhythm section in multiple genres including jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, rock, folk, rockabilly, tango and more. It is versatile even in the method of sounding the note, in arco or pizzicato. This great variety of musical styles and playability demands that the bass deliver an equally variable quality of sound. Depth, richness, balance, sweetness, sustain, power and clarity, as well as the response from the bow or finger, are many of the elements to be considered in judging the upright bass.

We take all of this into consideration when we select an instrument to offer for sale. Newly-made, vintage and antique basses are carefully chosen for their quality of sound. They are set up and adjusted, and if necessary, repaired and restored in our workshop to ensure they are at their peak of playability. Our selection includes instruments from the early 1800’s to the present, from workshops in the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and China, in price ranges for professional players, teachers, students and enthusiasts.
