William Salchow

William Salchow was born in America in 1926. In 1959, he received the Fulbright Scholarship to study traditional French bow making in Mirecourt, France, under Georges Barjonnet and Charles Alfred Bazin. He was the first American to study the art of bow making in France.

In 1960, Salchow moved to New York and founded the company Salchow & Sons. He trained his grandson, Issac, who has operated the company since William’s death in 2014. Under his leadership and expertise, Salchow & Sons continues to provide outstanding expertise in bow construction and repair.

Many professionals have used Salchow bows, including Yo-Yo Ma, Glenn Dicterow, Nathan Milstein, Zino Francescatti, Issac Stern, Itzhak Perlman and Leonard Rose.
