Fernando Gonzalez was born in 1921 in Asturias, Spain. He moved to Madrid in 1943 to apprentice with Santos Hernández, a local guitar maker. Gonzalez began constructing many kinds of stringed instruments and in 1948 he established his own workshop.
Gonzalez died in 2011 but his two sons, Fernando and Mercedes, continue to work at his workshop in Spain. The younger Fernando Gonzales makes instruments from recycled material for the “Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados de Cateura” in Asunción, Paraguay in addition to his classically modeled wood instruments.
