Raffaele Calace, Naples 1919
This violin is a very fine example of Calace’s craftsmanship. It has a powerful, open sound that is brilliant in the upper register. The back is a single piece of beautiful slab cut maple. The pegs have an interesting ornate pattern and are made of boxwood and ebony, matching the unique tailpiece. Interestingly, the instrument also bears a personal touch; below the label there is a handwritten dedication: “al grande artista M. Mario Viletta”, or “to the great artist Mr. Mario Viletta”. It is also branded lightly on the neck button, “Calace Napoli”.
