Matthew Furber

Matthew Furber was born in London in 1772. He established his own workshop in 1815, where he made many instruments for London traders. Furber constantly adapted his style to what would sell. As the demand for Italian instruments grew in the 19th century, he began to use Italian models for his work. He likely sought inspiration from the work of Vincenzo Panormo, a famous violin maker who brought his own models of Stradivari instruments into the London instrument trade.

Furber had several sons which he also trained in the luthier business. He may have also been associated with John Betts, who trained his son John Furber.
